Why Are Their More Viruses on Android Then iPhone?

The Android platform has more malware than the iPhone. It's a statement of fact. But why? What facets of Android phones make them seemingly less safe than iPhone? Are they really more dangerous, or is the Android platform really just a victim of its own success, and perhaps suffering from a bit of fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

7 Google Android Tablet

I often hear these sorts questions from co-workers and friends about which device is safer, or why Android seems to be more prone to malware. To be honest, it does seem that the iPhone is a safer device to use, but in actuality it can be just as dangerous, if not more, simply because Android has taken on the stigma of the more "dangerous" mobile phone platform. Why is that?

7 Google Android Tablet

First, iPhone seems safer because Apple has imposed some rather stringent controls over what software makes its way onto the Apple App Store. The open source style of Android and its App Market does enable the malware writers, but it also means that software submitted to it's directory has millions of eyeballs looking at, vice just the select few at Apple. The same can be said with regard to firmware and O/S type vulnerabilities, which research shows that the iOS platform might actually have more of. While Apple does a good job of fixing these security problems, it goes to show that iPhone isn't necessarily safer than Android, it simply has less publicized vulnerabilities, and vulnerabilities which are harder for people outside of the IT industry to understand. The Android platforms open market model makes it easier to distribute malware, and unfortunately for Android, malware is something that even the least savvy technology journalist can write about.

Second, what is it about the Android platform, that seems to be ringing the dinner bell as far as cyber criminals are concerned. Well, apart from the open market which enables the bad guys to more easily distribute malware, how bout the meteoric rise in popularity of Android? Cyber criminals are in it for financial gain, and they are going to operate where the money is. While Apple may be the world's wealthiest company currently, Android is the top mobile device platform in the world. Just as Microsoft Windows is the dominant desktop platform, Android is going to receive an unfair amount of attention from the criminals, simply because the number of potential targets is so much higher. Again, the open approach to the way Google handles the Android App Market does make it easier to distribute malware, but such is the cost of having the freedom of an Open Source platform. This isn't to say that iPhone users have no freedom of choice, nor that Android is completely open to the wolves, but in general, the Android platform lends itself to more techno savvy individuals. The open source structure of Android allows developers and handset owners to do nearly whatever they want to the platform. Does this make Android more dangerous? Perhaps. But it also allows malware and vulnerabilities that are discovered to be identified by the community, and fixed by Google, very quickly.

How does this all relate to Android having more malware? Android has more users. More users means more targets, and more opportunities to make money. So if you're using an Android phone, does that equate to swimming in a sea of sharks? Maybe. But, the tools exist to protect yourself, you just have to remember to use them.

The Story of the Android Tablet PC

Pen computing refers to a computer screen that uses the pressure or touch of a pen or stylus instead of the keyboard or mouse or touchpad.

7 Google Android Tablet

Pen computing technology, surprisingly enough goes way back to the 1800s. An electronic tablet used for handwriting was patented in 1888.

7 Google Android Tablet

In 1915 a system that analysed handwriting movements was invented.

In 1956 electronic text recognition, without a keyboard was developed. More modern pen computing predates mouse and keyboard technology by at least 20 years.

In the 1980s many companies were beginning to produce tablet type of devices.

At the same time desktop PCs and then laptops were being developed and becoming smaller in size and larger in technological sophistication as they progressed.

In the laptops, portability was greatly improved, but not quite there yet. It would take a tiny tablet with the versatility of use of a computer to be truly and inconspicuously convenient. It could be held in a purse or tiny case and lie on a conference table, no more in the way than a small book.

In 2000, Microsoft produced the Microsoft tablet PC running an enhanced Microsoft Windows operating system.

In 2003, Fingerworks came out with touch technology and this was developed into the interface for Apple iPhone.

In 2005, Google acquired 'Android' a little known cell phone software company. In Nov 2007, it was announced that they were developing a mobile device.

Although on the cards for a while before, Apple caused a sensation with the release of its iPhone, and later, in early 2010 its iPad, with its convenient finger touch interface and the technological world has been in a buzz of excited development, to keep up with, and try and improve on this device.

Because of the limits and restrictions on outside software for use in the Apple iPad operating system, the newer Android operating system is rapidly catching up in popularity. Android offers users the huge advantage of being completely compatible with plugins, downloads and in fact, almost any application available. In addition, there are over 80,000 applications available specifically for Android OS, and a great many of them are available free.

The release of Android 1.1 was announced in February 2009 and its first update, 'Éclair' in December 2009 and January 2010, with improvements, such as Microsoft exchange support. It has a distribution of about 40.4%. 'Cupcake', was brought in, in April. It has an estimated distribution of about 9.7%. With it came Bluetooth support, camcorder video recording and watching, virtual keyboard with text prediction, among other things. In May 2010 came 'Frozen Yogurt' or 'Froyo' together with all kinds of new features, including Adobe Flash support, Chrome's V8 Javascript engine. Its distribution is 33.4%. The next update in September brought improved technology, including processing speed and camera improvements, and was called 'Donut'. It has a distribution of about 16.4%. On the cards are still 'Gingerbread', 'Honeycomb' and 'Ice cream'. With them are expected a whole host of new features, such as improved copy/paste functions, social networking, support for WebimM video playback, Google TV and many others.

A Deep Look at The Adam Tablet And It's Controversy

Despite the many controversies and negativity regarding the Adam Tablet, this tablet computer is worth some attention. Even though many have not heard of the Adam Tablet, this device has successfully won the hearts of many 'Adam-ites'. The popularity is made clear from the blog comments of Adam Tablet fans that depict how religiously they follow and preach how mind-blowing it really is. The Adam Tablet is manufactured by a Bangalore-based company called Notion Ink. The reason leading to the lack of knowledge regarding this tablet is the fact that the company is still in its start-up stages and also, the company has not yet adopted any marketing or promotional strategies. In most cases the development or any other communication regarding the Adam Tablet is done directly by the company CEO, Rohan Sharvan.

7 Google Android Tablet

What is praise-worthy about the Adam Tablet is that it is the first Android device to come equipped with Trans-reflective Pixel Qi dual-mode low-power screen display. Notion Ink has introduced this Android Tablet with four different options to choose from which includes LCD and Wi-Fi; LCD, Wi-Fi and 3G; Pixel Qi and Wi-Fi; and Pixel Qi, Wi-Fi and 3G. Further elaborating on the specifications, and has a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 250 processor which allows for 1080 pixel video output. This tablet is running Andriod 2.2 OS which is customized to support the Eden platform developed by Notion Ink. The weight is 730 g which is comparatively heavier and have a 10.1 inch screen size.

7 Google Android Tablet

From the above mentioned features it sounds like Adam Tablet is a direct competition for the other tablet PCs such as iPad, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy; however that is not the case. Ever since its pre-order launch in December 2010, it has received numerous complaints regarding the product. Poor customer support, shipping problems, wrong order delivery and low build quality are among the most common criticism. In January 2011, there was claim put forward by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding the poor build quality of the manually linked wires and components. The CEO, in his Notion Ink official blog defended the Adam Tablet by stating that the product is of a start-up company and admitting it is not a 'beautiful assembly'.

Regardless, in the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) where Adam Tablet was presented to the public to see and succeeded in getting positive internal reviews but some walked out not entirely overwhelmed. Recently, there have been updates the operating system, including support for the Kindle eBook Reader, customized Honeycomb ROM and additional support for Dolphin web-browser. With the prices being slightly below the average tablet prices, there are some interested buyers of the product. As mentioned before, regardless of lack of promotion and marketing, there is a huge Adam fan base which signals the success and further popularity of the device. However, the future is still uncertain for this tablet with major established brands like Motorola, Samsung, Apple and Asus adding new and improved versions to their existing line of tablet computers.

Android is an operating system for mobile devices such as cellular phones, tablet computers and netbooks. Being developed by Google, Android is based upon the Linux kernel and GNU software. A Day in the Life of A Smartphone

Smart phones are everywhere and users are asking us on a regular basis to support the latest models on our networks. Predictions are that smartphones will outsell PCs by 2012. I can see why because, as more apps become available, I have been finding less and less need for my laptop. Like me, many users are passionate about these devices because of the productive (and cool) apps that are available. In keeping with this trend, I thought it might be fun to share with you what apps I run on my iPhone and why.

7 Google Android Tablet

It is 6:00 a.m., and as I start my day I am checking my email and schedule from GWMail and GWCalendar. These apps do not sync mail and appointments to my phone, but rather, they access GroupWise via WebAccess. I can respond to and send emails, search my folders, and delete old messages. I can also send and accept appointments.

7 Google Android Tablet

* Available for the iPhone from the App Store.
* Beta for the Android available from Ghost Pattern Software.

Today, I am flying to another state and need to check in for my flight. Enter the app from Southwest. From this app, I can check in, book flights, change flights, and check on my frequent flier miles. After checking in, I see my boarding pass: barcode and all. One of the gate reps told me that soon we will be able to have the app scanned and will not need a paper boarding pass. How very green! Other airlines have similar apps available.

* Available for the iPhone, Blackberry and Android.

To see what the weather is going to be like for the day, I use the app from The Weather Channel. I can bookmark different cities, so prior to planning this trip, I added my destination city into the bookmarks. This let me keep a watch on the weather in that area and helped me pack appropriately. The app also gives weather advisory and storm warning information.

* Available for the iPhone, Blackberry and the Android.

Time to jump in the car and head to the airport! To track my mileage, I use the first app I ever loaded on my phone: Milog. I can enter my starting and ending mileage, date of travel, purpose, mileage reimbursement rate, and tolls. At the end of the month, I can report on my business mileage: it even calculates the total reimbursement. The report can then be emailed to me. This app alone saved me enough time in one month to pay for the phone.

* This particular app is only available for the iPhone, but a quick search shows many other similar apps available for the Android and Blackberry.

I am finally checked in and heading to the gate. Time for Starbucks. My handy Starbucks Card app allows me to enter my Starbucks card information, reload the cards with more funds, and find the store nearest to me. When I am ready to pay, Starbucks can scan my phone! One of my friends noted that it is "like EZ-Pass for coffee!"

At the gate, I am checking in with my social networks. Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn all have apps for the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry that make reviewing and updating a breeze.

A text message to my phone from the airline alerts me that my flight is delayed. Time for a movie. Netflix provides an app that allows me to access my account, add movies to my instant queue and view them on my phone. If I can't finish the movie before returning home, I can pick up where I left off from the same queue on my PS3.

* Available for iPhone, Blackberry, and Android.

Finally arriving at my destination (better late than never), I head to the hotel. Time to find a place for dinner. I use Urban Spoon to find restaurants that are close by, check the menus, and, most importantly, the ratings. This handy app, which is available for the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry, allows me to try local establishments rather than relying on chain restaurants. It can then switch over to Google Maps which gives me walking or driving directions to the location.

Back to business... since our company began sending out this monthly email newsletter, I check my Constant Contact app to be sure it was sent and to see how many folks (like you!) opened it. Then I check in with my Salesforce app to see if I have any outstanding tasks, and to confirm the contact information for the customer I am meeting with in the morning.

Time to turn in. I realize that I have been productive and connected during my entire travel day without opening my laptop! These are just a few of the apps on my phone and a tiny number of those that are available!

I was in search of the best tablet PC because I wanted something for college that would be good to take to class. I used version tablet devices by HP, but I found that the interaction was simply too slow and the lag would cause me to fall behind during class. I read a tablet review that said it would be best if I stayed away from any machine that is based on the Windows operating system.

7 Google Android Tablet

Since the chip speed can be very slow it produces a lot of lag. When reading a review of tablet PCs you should keep this in mind. If you are looking for speed you may want to stay away from slower chips and big operating systems. This makes it very difficult to run a word processor and surf the Internet at the same time.

7 Google Android Tablet

What you should look for in a tablet PC review is what the person will be using the tablet for most frequently. If you are intending on running multiple applications at once you will need something with a lot of performance. After looking at almost every tablet PC and reading all of the reviews I decided on an iPad. The reason for this is that it has the A4 chip that will allow you to run applications without any lag.

The system is very fast and this can help you to type and surf the Internet during class. It is also very light at less than two pounds and it is affordable for less than 0. What I loved is that I can put music on the device and all of the games and applications that I already purchased. The color resolution is amazing and the IPS technology is great for viewing movies with friends, this is a device I use every day and love.
